Part of Breaking Ground residency. ‘I am John Brodie’ is a piece of work based around the last league goal scored in the Horton Road End in 1970 before Bradford Park Avenue were subsequently kicked out of the league.
Referencing the uncanny likeness of John Brodie to a younger Alan Ward and the last ‘football pink’ photograph from the Telegraph and Argus of Sat 4th April, 1970, Ward recreated the 45 minutes played into that goal mouth, tracking his physical effort by gps. At 3pm on Saturday 12th September, 2015 of the residency, he re-imagined playing as the left-back Brodie defending that goal and pitting his wits against a young Kevin Keegan, who was to be sold to Liverpool at the end of that season.
‘The small crowd were urging on the Avenue players, but it was Scunthorpe who went ahead in the 17th minute. KERR was the scorer. Cassidy beat the Avenue defence with ease, and Kerr ran on to beat Hickman to the ball.’

He also recreated ‘the pink’ photograph of Kerr scoring by mapping the players positions onto the existing grass area, substituting the archaeologists and volunteers in their place. This was also done at precisely 3.17pm on the 11th of September in homage to the original goal time.
